Inclusive Hiring Pilot

Through the inclusive hiring pilot initiative, launched in July 2024, SUSS employed three Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and engaged a group of PwDs with autism requiring high support needs for various roles and projects. These include roles relating to Graphic Design, Digital Marketing and Programme Admin Support; and tasks such as packing over 500 orientation goodie bags for the Counselling department, designing over 200 thank-you cards for the SUSS Associates Lunch, and crafting over 500 handmade Hama bead coasters for the Participation-Inclusion in Action Conference (PIAC) held on 16–18 November 2024.

These hires, aged 20 to 40, have conditions such as hearing loss, autism (Asperger’s), autism with high support needs, and mild depression. The selection process involved close collaboration across SUSS functions, including Human Resources, Sustainability, and faculty specialising in special needs, to align job requirements with candidates’ skills. Pre-employment briefings and onboarding sessions supported smooth integration, complemented by mid-project check-ins and one-on-one sessions to address challenges and ensure a positive experience for all parties.

Special Education Needs (SEN) Training

In line with the University’s mission to cultivate an inclusive and accessible learning environment, Special Education Needs (SEN) training has been launched for all teaching faculty and selected student leaders.

SEN101 is a training programme designed to equip our teaching community with the essential knowledge and skills to support and teach students with special needs in higher learning institutions.

The programme consists of 2 modules:

  1. SEN101 (Basic):  Provides an overview of key characteristics of the different disabilities.
  2. SEN101 (Advanced): Provides a deeper understanding and strengthens insights into specific disabilities, along with tailored teaching strategies to support students effectively.

SEN102 exposes students to the different challenges that students with disabilities may face whilst at SUSS. Students will gain more awareness regarding the different types of disabilities and facilitate better and more respectful communication. Emphasis will be placed on creating an environment of respect and acceptance where every student is valued for their unique abilities and contributions.

We plan to expand SEN102 to reach a wider group of students and are currently developing SEN training for administrative staff.

Together, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all our students.

Investment and Procurement

Investment

We are committed to incorporating ESG considerations into our decision-making processes when constructing and managing our investment portfolio. This commitment is part of our broader strategy to support sustainable and responsible investing, as part of which also supports a growing movement in the global investment community to align investment activities with positive impact.

Our investment portfolio is primarily invested through externally managed funds, rather than direct ownership of individual securities. Even so, our Investment Office identifies external investment managers that share our investment philosophy and reviews how they integrate ESG principles in their investment philosophy and process.

We are mindful that any investing that is responsible to a diverse group of stakeholders will have to balance investment returns and risks when incorporating ESG factors in the investment process to ensure long-term portfolio resilience.

Procurement

We are dedicated to adopting sustainable procurement policies that align with our commitment. Sustainability is a key consideration in our procurement processes.

Initiatives:

  • 5% sustainability weightage for all tender evaluation processes
  • Sustainability criterion for chartered transport, catering services and venue rental
  • Sustainable procurement training

Partnerships

We actively explore and curate collaboration opportunities with local communities, stakeholders, and external partners on initiatives to drive sustainability within the business ecosystem and at the community level. By sharing knowledge and working together, we aim to address pressing environmental and social challenges, fostering collective impact.

Examples of partnerships include:

SUSS UniLEARN x COPE Disaster Champions Interactive eBooks on climate change
