Modern theories in educational assessment and advancement in technology have transformed testing into flexible and informative tools that can be useful to address individual learner’s learning needs. These include classification of learners’ mastery levels for the cognitive skills that learners need to succeed, misconception identification, feedback, segmented content and spaced practice. This workshop focusses on how to build a reliable and affordable adaptive learning tool to facilitate personalised learning. Participants will be equipped with fundamental principles of adaptive testing and learning. A brief historical review of some theoretical developments of Computerised Adaptive Testing (CAT) and a discussion about how modern theories in educational assessment, key learning models and technology can facilitate personalised learning will be presented. The potential of using the adaptive testing and learning technology in education and its impact will also be discussed.
At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to address the following:
- describe the purposes of adaptive testing and learning
- identify the process for creating adaptive testing and learning
- apply key principles and learning models to design an adaptive testing and learning module
- recognise the potential of adaptive testing and learning in teaching and learning
