00:04 – Welcome to SUSS. I hope that you have a wonderful time with us, a rich and rewarding time of learning, making friends and gaining new experiences.
00:16 – I hope that you will also go through the orientation and enjoy the talks and activities that we have set up for you so that you can better acculturate to the university and settle in faster.
00:26 – SUSS is an unusual university. We have more courses in adult learning and continual learning than most other universities in Singapore. Along the way, we've developed a unique pedagogy which includes, not just traditional classroom learning, but also online learning, and the flexibility for you to learn in your own white learning spaces, in peer learning, and through the online material that we provided.
00:52 – We're also an unusual university in being very industry oriented and applied, which is good for you when you start looking for your jobs. This means that you will encounter lots of experiential learning, internships, workshops, hackathons, sociovations and other ways for you to plug into the industry more quickly.
01:14 – But perhaps what makes SUSS most unique is our 3H philosophy of Head, Heart and Habit. Head is probably familiar to all of you. It's the knowledge, the methodological training you will acquire while you are here. Heart is probably what makes SUSS most unique. It is our whole of university mission to do social good, to transform and make an impact on society. And we hope that all of you will pick up that spirit in SUSS as well. And Habit refers to lifelong learning, the need to continually upskill and to acquire new knowledge and update yourselves even as your jobs and industry change.
01:55 – So, I hope that you will have a great time in SUSS, that you will make the most of your opportunities, join student interest groups if that's what interests you, participate in all the community engagement and internships, and other attachment opportunities. Make friends, enjoy yourselves and when you graduate, remember to come back not just for your upskilling but to keep in touch with us. I wish you all the best. Thank you.

Dear Students
Welcome to SUSS! You are embarking on an exciting and meaningful journey — one of learning, growth and self‑discovery. In a rapidly changing world shaped by AI and global uncertainties, it is natural to feel anxious about what lies ahead. While knowledge remains important, your future success will depend on your ability to adapt, innovate, collaborate, reason ethically, and make strategic decisions.
As you begin university life, allow me to share three reflections to guide you.
First, be clear about your purpose.
Ask yourself what you want out of your university experience. Ask yourself what you hope to gain from your time at SUSS. Is it only a degree, or a fully lived university experience? Will you walk this path alone, or grow together with a community of peers? Will you stay within classrooms, or step beyond to explore overseas internships, start an impact-driven business or lead a student interest group? The choices you make — big and small — will shape both your journey and who you become.
Second, cultivate discipline.
University gives you freedom, but with freedom comes responsibility. Manage your time well, prepare for your classes, and take ownership of your learning. Discipline is not about perfection, but about making consistent and thoughtful choices, even when it is difficult.
Finally, embody curiosity.
Stay open to new ideas, perspectives and experiences. Be willing to question, explore and learn beyond what is required. As Mahatma Gandhi wisely said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Curiosity will keep your learning meaningful and your journey enriching.
I wish you every success as you make wise choices and create joyful, memorable experiences at SUSS. May your time here be one of purpose, growth and discovery.
