College of Interdisciplinary and Experiential Learning (CIEL)

The College of Interdisciplinary and Experiential Learning (CIEL) has been set up to develop and oversee the delivery of the SUSS Core Curriculum for all programmes in the university. Drawing on the expertise of its multidisciplinary faculty and specialists, CIEL harnesses interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives, and experiential learning to prepare our graduates for complex and dynamic futures, allowing them to embrace volatility and capitalize on disruption so as to contribute to the betterment of the world we live in.

CIEL believes in the value and importance of learning in real-world contexts and the reciprocal relationship between theory and practice. To provide students with opportunities for applied learning and to appreciate the theory-practice link, CIEL is committed to creating an ecosystem of lifelong learning pathways and opportunities where knowledge, skills, values and experiences are acquired and co-created with the community. The formation of sustainable learning networks with local and global communities including industry, university, government and non-governmental organizations are vital in this vision, and establishing these shared learning journeys is a core emphasis in CIEL.

The two departments under CIEL are Core Learning and Experiential Learning.

SUSS Core Curriculum Overview

The SUSS Core curriculum develops adaptive and resilient global citizens through 4 branches of courses imbued with our core philosophy of Head, Heart, and Habit (3Hs), and offers our undergraduates a shared SUSS experience. These courses keep our students rooted in strong theoretical foundations and applied knowledge, and equip them with skills for personal, interpersonal, professional and organisational success. They enable learners to appreciate complex issues in local and global contexts, enhance their understandings of individuals, communities and relationships, and empower them to contribute meaningfully to society through interdisciplinary approaches and experiential learning.

SUSS Core Courses

Students are required to complete courses from all 4 branches according to the requirements specified by their programme. The courses offered under each of the four branches are listed in the table below.

For July 2023 Intake onwards, full-time undergraduate students are required to complete 60 cu of SUSS Core courses and part-time undergraduate students with and without honours are required to complete 30 cu and 20 cu of SUSS Core courses, respectively.

Click on the corresponding table below for more information and refer to the individual programme curriculum for the latest updates.
