Synopsis

Dialogue is an important vehicle by which instructors come to understand students’ reasoning, extend students’ thinking and advance their ideas in the classroom. This workshop introduces a communicative approach that provides a perspective on how instructors can orchestrate dialogic talk in their classroom. Each dimension of the approach serves a different function in developing students’ understanding. Juxtaposing with the types and role of different questions, participants will explore how these different types of questions might be relevant to the different communication purposes. Participants will also get to analyse their own communication approach, and suggest how it can be improved to extend students’ thinking and knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
  1. Understand the communicative approach framework
  2. Understand how the different conditions (interactive/non-interactive; authoritative/dialogic) of the framework can bring about learning
  3. Identify the role of questioning and types of questions that might be relevant to the different communication conditions
  4. Analyse a short sequence of instruction using the communicative approach framework
