An Internship Experience at a Cambodian Bank: A Journey of Professional Growth and Cultural Immersion

My internship at Panda Commercial Bank in Phnom Penh Cambodia provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the financial sector and immersed me in the Cambodian culture.

My daily responsibilities encompassed a diverse array of tasks, ranging from translating the official website to meeting vendors for advertising projects. Engaging with seasoned professionals within the bank, I witnessed first-hand the application of theoretical concepts learned in classrooms to the intricacies of real-world financial operations. The exposure to a multitude of departments, including marketing, private banking and compliance, broadened my perspectives and deepened my appreciation for the multifaceted nature of the banking industry.

Our CEO, Ms Cynthia Liaw, also brought us to many networking events during our time in Cambodia. These networking events serve as a window into the inner workings of the banking industry, which provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the local and ASEAN business environment. We gained valuable industry-specific knowledge that can complement our academic learnings.

By attending networking events to engage in meaningful conversations with professionals across industries, we enhance our communication and social skills.  For example, effective interpersonal communication, active listening, and relationship-building skills.

Beyond work, I endeavoured to immerse myself in the local culture, which profoundly enriched my overall experience. By interacting with the locals, exploring the historical landmarks, and relishing the tantalizing flavors of traditional Cambodian cuisine, I gain a holistic understanding of the country's social fabric. This cultural immersion fostered a sense of camaraderie, and also augmented my adaptability and cross-cultural communication skills.

During this work attachment, I encountered some exciting challenges, which served as a catalyst for personal and professional growth. Navigating language barriers and adapting to the local business practices also sharpened my problem-solving abilities, and fostered my resilience and tenacity in the face of adversity.

Overall, my internship experience with Panda Commercial Bank has been a transformative journey, which enrich my understanding of the ASEAN business landscape and provide invaluable insights into the intricacies of retail and private banking. Through hands-on exposure to diverse projects and the guidance of seasoned professionals, I have developed a comprehensive skill set that encompasses technical expertise, adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving abilities. I am now better equipped with the necessary tools to navigate the dynamic challenges of the ASEAN business environment. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunities given to me by Panda Commercial Bank and SUSS, and look forward to applying the knowledge and experiences gained here to my future endeavours.
