BSE313 Sports Coaching provides students with a guide to the theoretical and practical aspects of sports coaching, highlighting the social, cultural and pedagogical concepts underpinning good coaching practices. Students will gain the knowledge to explore and apply the complex interplay between coach, athlete, coaching programme and its social context. In addition, this course allows students to develop their basic technical skills and employ coaching strategies for working with individual and team athletes thus preparing these sports people technically, tactically, physically and mentally and therefore be able to design effective coaching sessions.

Learning Outcome

  • Examine the main theories relating to leadership and their implications to the sporting environment.
  • Reflect and review critically on the ethical, social, cultural and pedagogical implications of their knowledge and actions in coaching.
  • Design several specific strategies to promote athlete development.
  • Develop the variables and components of effective training and coaching process.
  • Compare and contrast the different types of coaching philosophies and styles in developing good character and getting athletes to perform at their optimal level.
  • Analyse critically on professional practice by drawing upon theories and literature associated with the disciplines that inform the socio-cultural interpretations of sports coaching.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan a full season periodised programme for a specific sport for junior developmental athletes: a. Apply the principles of the macro and microcycles of planning; b. Apply the phases and sub-phases of periodisation; c. Provide a sample of an unit plan
