This course focuses on language and literacy, the foundation for children’s learning in the early childhood and later years of schooling. The issues and debates surrounding language and literacy learning in multi-lingual Singapore and other selected countries are presented and discussed. The importance of success in literacy is emphasised but placed in the context of the growing child and how important a positive attitude is for learning, for life and overall enjoyment in reading and in literature. How children’s language develops is presented in the context of the home and early childhood centres and how it is the basis for later literacy learning. All aspects of the literacy process are presented including the reading process and its relationship to writing, including strategies for promoting and assessing literacy development.
