Language Structure: Sentences and Sounds (ELG213)

Synopsis

This course builds on students’ basic understanding of English sentence structure (grammar) and English sound system (pronunciation). In the study of English grammar, the focus will be on developing a more profound understanding and analysis of sentence structure in terms of its constituents and word classes. In the study of pronunciation, the focus will be on developing a deeper understanding and analysis of English pronunciation using the International Phonetics Association (IPA) system.

  • Identify the constituent and word class structures of English
  • Demonstrate their understanding of the constituent and word class structures of English by using the theoretical constructs learnt
  • Recognize all the key English sounds and prosodic features
  • Illustrate their understanding of the key English sounds and prosodic features by using the theoretical constructs learnt
  • Discriminate, with reasoned arguments, between grammatical and ungrammatical sentence constructions
  • Differentiate the key English sounds and prosodic features in their listening and speech
