Synopsis

PSS307 Penology studies the punishment of crime and prison management. This course highlights the objectives of punishment and discusses the effectiveness of the different models related to punishment. By understanding the policy guidelines to punishment and their impact on offenders, students will be able to critically assess the deterrence strategies to criminality. This course also examines the competing theoretical rationales in the implementation of modern penalty, punishment and imprisonment, including constructions of moral responsibility, deterrence, retribution, rehabilitation, reform, and incapacitation.
