Social Research and Programme Evaluation provides an overview of methods commonly used in social science research and evaluation. Emphasis will be applied to ethical issues in social work research as well as the utilisation of research and evaluation for practice. Research design studied includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The emphasis is on strengthening the linkages between evidence-based knowledge, theory and practice evaluation. Methods of programme and practice evaluation assess efficiency and effectiveness in social service delivery will also be examined. Students will also be introduced to the use of computers in data analysis.

Learning Outcome

  • Compare the quantitative and qualitative methods commonly used in research designs and programme evaluation.
  • Demonstrate practical skills in the use of computers in research.
  • Examine research bias, particularly with regard to issues of diversity and have the appropriate knowledge and skills for culturally competent and ethical research and evaluation.
  • Discuss literature searches and reviews in research and literature.
  • Evaluate and interpret data as well as critique evaluation reports.
  • Plan both summative and formative evaluations on social work practice.
