Fully-funded by Temasek Foundation, the Centre for Experiential (CEL) will be bringing back Sociovation Forum 2022, this time with a focus on creating powerful social media campaigns to address the challenges posed by the misuse of internet technology such as internet fraud, fake news, and hate speech. Sociovation will continue to bring youths from Singapore and across the region together. This will be a hybrid non-credit bearing programme – with both physical and virtual sessions happening concurrently.

There will be the possibility of travel for ASEAN participants, depending on prevailing VTL arrangements between Singapore and respective countries.

About STEP Sociovation Forum 2022

Sociovation Forum 2022 details

Given that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of global digital culture, people in Southeast Asia have grown far more reliant on the Internet to work, communicate and entertain themselves as they stay indoors due to virus fears. With a rapid surge of mobile phone ownership and social media usage, there has been an alarming pattern of problems emerging that can no longer be ignored. These complex challenges permeate all areas, such as financial scams and identity theft targeted at vulnerable groups, fake news clouding pandemic battles, and hate speech dividing communities.

Crimes aside, the social media sphere has also cultivated behavior that sits on very grey lines. With the pandemic’s onslaught of rules concerning mask-wearing and dining, online vigilantism has grown more prevalent in many of our societies. Beyond scenarios concerning the pandemic, it is also increasingly popular for netizens to hold “social media trials” on controversial cases or individuals. Without proper regulation, social media can be a hotbed for strong public anger and divided communities.
