High Overall Employment Rate Of 95.5 Per Cent For 2018 Cohort

98.7% of SUSS pioneer batch of full-time Accountancy graduates gained employment within six months of completing their final examinations

Singapore, 26 Feb 2019 – 98.7% of Singapore University of Social Sciences’ (SUSS) pioneer batch of full-time Accountancy graduates in the labour force managed to get a job within six months of completing their final examinations, with more than a third offered jobs through work attachments, a graduation requirement for SUSS undergraduates.

The results were revealed in the annual Graduate Employment Survey (GES) jointly conducted by SUSS and the other Autonomous Universities. It was the first time that SUSS participated in the survey.

91.7% or 154 of the 168 SUSS alumni who graduated in 2018 took part in the survey. They were from the pioneer batch of full-time students who graduated in Accountancy, Finance and Marketing.

The survey indicated that 95.5% of SUSS graduates in the labour force gained employment within six months after completing their final examinations.

The mean and median gross monthly salaries of SUSS graduates in full-time permanent jobs were $3,002 and $3,000 respectively in 2018, with the Bachelor of Science in Finance students earning the highest mean and median salaries of $3,393 and $3,400 respectively.

SUSS President, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat said, “We are proud of our pioneer batch of graduates from our full-time programmes. The results show that SUSS’s graduates are in demand and that our applied approach has prepared them well for the marketplace. Through our 3H’s education philosophy – ‘Head’ for professional competency with applied knowledge, ‘Heart’ for social awareness of the needs of the society, and ‘Habit’ for passion towards lifelong learning – we hope our students will realise their fullest potential and be valuable assets to the nation. We also encourage our alumni to return to SUSS to continually upgrade themselves.”

How has SUSS helped our graduating students find jobs?

Work Attachment is a graduation requirement for full-time degree undergraduates. Comprising at least 24 weeks throughout the course, it exposes students to authentic work environments and facilitates their learning and assimilation of work ethics, and soft skills for work. In addition to the 24-week work attachment, students are also encouraged to take on other internships to gain more exposure to real work environments.

As our students undertake their work attachments, they are guided and supervised by seasoned industry professionals, who also coach them on career directions and professional development. SUSS also conducts career-relevant workshops for students such as job search skills, interviewing skills and personal branding, and creates industry engagement opportunities through company visits and talks by industry veterans.

SUSS’s commitment to holistic education is evident not only in its Work Attachment but also in Overseas Experience and Service-Learning initiatives, which are graduation requirements for SUSS’ full-time programmes. Students are also required to prepare an e-portfolio, and take SUSS Core [1] courses for a well-rounded academic curriculum. Together with the academic curriculum, these initiatives collectively and coherently articulate the University’s educational philosophy of Head, Heart and Habit.

He expressed his gratitude to the professors who had taught him in SUSS. “(They) are well-versed in the content and have the foresight to know which modules would be most beneficial for my career development. Despite being at Keppel for only 7 months, I have already applied my academic knowledge to my work, particularly from one of the modules which taught me how to interpret and draw flowcharts. As I move on to my next rotation in Keppel, I am confident that I will continue to apply my academic knowledge to perform my work effectively and efficiently.”
