Senior Citizens Celebrate NDP With Sports Day

SUSS reaches out to community to promote active lifestyle for seniors

The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) organised a Sports Day to celebrate National Day with the clients of St Luke's Eldercare Ltd centres and Singapore Amalgamated Services Co-operative Organisation Ltd (SASCO), on Saturday, 4 August 2018 at Promenade Sports Hub.

It is a community outreach and engagement event initiated by the University’s S R Nathan School of Human Development (NSHD), with a long-term goal of developing sporting activities suited for seniors.

SUSS President, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, in support of the event, said: “This is a meaningful event, and I am glad it is led by our gerontology faculty. It is in line with the University’s social focus, to have the heart for the society and to walk our talk.”

SUSS Head of Gerontology Programme, Professor Kalyani Kirtikar Mehta, who is one of the organising committee members, said: “We hope to make this an annual event to encourage an active lifestyle amongst the senior citizens, by injecting fun and intergenerational perspective into the activities.”

Over 100 senior citizens participated in the Sports Day. More than 100 volunteers including SUSS staff, SUSS Gerontology students and alumni, as well as staff of SASCO and St Luke’s Day Care centres, helped out at the Sports Day.

SUSS offers graduate programmes in Gerontology. For details on our Graduate Diploma and Master programmes, please refer here. For details on PhD in Gerontology, please refer here.

Official Launch of Geron EngAGE

On the same day, SUSS will also be launching the Gerontology social network to be named Geron EngAGE.

It is a collaboration of SUSS Gerontology alumni, students, faculty and industry players in the eldercare landscape. The Sports Day event is the first in a series of activities launched by the Geron EngAge, to raise awareness of ageing issues and advocate for a better environment for elders.

Geron EngAGE provides a platform to raise greater awareness of the work of gerontologists through evidence-based inputs and educational activities.
