Youli Cho is all smiles after achieving her academic success!

Congratulations to Youli Cho, SUSS Master of Applied Research in Social Sciences student, for achieving a significant milestone in her academic journey! Following her presentation at the Asia Economic Community Forum 2023 held in South Korea, her quantitative research paper "Meritocratic Beliefs and Economic Growth: A Mediating Effect of Economic Inequality" was published in the Asia and the Global Economy Journal in December 2023. Acknowledging the significance of her research, Youli's accomplishment was graciously recognised with an Honorarium, further highlighting the impact and relevance of her findings in the field of social sciences.

Motivated by her passion for understanding the dynamics and root causes of inequality, Youli embarked on the challenging task of conducting quantitative research. Despite the rigorous demands of her academic programme, transitioning from a corporate background and shouldering the responsibilities of caring for a newborn baby, she demonstrated unwavering dedication to her endeavour, with a keen focus on exploring the intricate relationship between meritocratic beliefs and economic inequality.

Youli reflected on her experience, “I never dreamt of the chance to present at international academic forums alongside respected scholars in the field, let alone have my paper published! Thank you Associate Professor Fang Zheng, from the Office of Graduate Studies, who served not only as my supervisor but also as a remarkable mentor who provided unwavering guidance and encouragement throughout the process, turning this achievement into a reality.”

In closing, Youli reflected that while the research process can be daunting, it is equally rewarding. For her, it was not just about acquiring knowledge but also about self-discovery and the cultivation of discipline.
