SUSS School of Humanities and Behavioural Sciences (SHBS) received a donation of $20,000 from luxury watch retailer, Cortina Watch, at their 50th anniversary gala dinner on 20 November 2022 to support students of the BA Translation and Interpretation programme. The donation was in celebration of their 50th anniversary, and in line with their continuous efforts to support the community’s social and educational needs throughout the years. During the gala, Associate Professor Ludwig Tan, SUSS Dean of SHBS, was presented with the donation by Mr Raymond Lim, Executive Director of Cortina Holdings.

Associate Professor Ludwig Tan expressed his gratitude for the generosity and added, “The donation will enable us to recognise the efforts and talents of our top students from the programme and help them in their careers and further studies. It will also help those from the programme who are in financial need to complete their studies at SUSS.”

Associate Professor Susan Xu, Head of BA Translation and Interpretation (BATI) programme, also expressed her gratitude to Mr Lim for his kind donations. She shared, “Many BATI programme students have benefited from Cortina Watch’s past donations. On behalf of our students and the university, I would like to express our sincere appreciations to the company.”

For the past five years, SUSS has awarded the Cortina Watch Study Awards in Translation Studies to support students from the BATI programme who require financial aid to pursue their studies. In addition to the study awards, the latest donation will also be used to sponsor the new Cortina Watch Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards, which will be awarded to top students at the SHBS convocations.

Ms Chooi Pei Xuan, SUSS BATI programme graduate who received the study award in 2021, said that she was honoured to be a recipient as it recognised her hard work and motivated her to achieve better results. She expressed, “The award helped to lessen my financial burden as the amount was used to deduct my school fees for the July 2021 and Jan 2022 semester. I was able to pursue my education with more ease and confidence.”
