SUSS Welcomes Mr Stephen Lee Ching Yen As Chancellor

SUSS Welcomes Mr Stephen Lee Ching Yen As Chancellor

Mr Stephen Lee Ching Yen has been appointed Chancellor with effect from 1 August 2018. SUSS is very honoured to have Mr Lee join us at this transitionary but significant phase of our university’s growth and endeavour to serve society through higher education.

Mr Lee has a distinguished career in the private and public sector. He currently chairs NTUC Income Insurance Cooperative and Shanghai Commercial Bank (Hong Kong), and also serves as a member of the Council of Presidential Advisers. He also holds directorships with Temasek Holdings (Private) Ltd, CapitaLand Limited and the Singapore Labour Foundation.

Mr Lee has previously served as Chairperson of an extensive range of organisations, including Singapore National Employers Federation (1988-2014), Enterprise Singapore (1995-2002), PSA International Pte Ltd (2002-2005), Singapore Business Federation (2002-2008), and Singapore Airlines Ltd (2006-2016). He was also a member of the National Wage Council (1978-2016), and a nominated Member of Parliament (1994 -1997). In recognition of Mr Lee’s contributions and commitment to industrial relations, tri-partism and the Singapore economy, he was conferred the Order of Nila Utama (First Class) in 2015, the Distinguished Comrade of Labour in 2015, and the Distinguished Service Order in 2006.

SUSS would like to express our deep appreciation to Dr Aline Wong for her contributions during her term as Chancellor. As Chancellor, she provided inspiration to the university in its role of providing a quality education for working adults and adult learners. She was actively engaged in many of the university’s new initiatives, including its advancement into becoming an Autonomous University, enabling it to enhance its contribution to the nation’s higher education sector. Dr Wong’s relationship with the university goes back even beyond the time of its establishment in 2005, through her involvement in its predecessor, the Open University Development Programme. The university is fortunate that from 2005 till prior to her becoming SUSS Chancellor, she had served continuously as its Academic Advisor, giving valuable guidance and advice on its various formative academic processes and directions.
