Shanghai Film Academy

Shanghai Film Academy (SFA), Shanghai University, was founded on 5 July 2015, with famous film director Chen Kaige acting as its first dean. SFA was born from School of Film and Television Art and Technology Shanghai University, which was founded in 1995 and headed by famous film director Xie Jin. Based on innovative development and connotation construction over 25 years, SFA has become one of China’s best film and television schools. SFA has 9 undergraduate majors, 6 master programmes, 3 doctoral programmes, and 1 post-doctoral research station. At present, there are more than 800 undergraduates and more than 460 master and doctoral students. “Film Studies” discipline was rated as Shanghai Key Discipline, Peak Discipline, and First-Class Discipline of Local High-level University. SFA has a well-equipped experimental teaching platform. Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Motion Picture Special Effects and Shanghai Municipal Film & Television Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center were set up in SFA. In 2019, SFA launched Shanghai Film Academy Productions, Inc. Beside that, SFA has established the only bilingual academic journal in the field of Film science in China, Journal of Film Studies.

On 13 December 2022, SUSS and SFA signed a MOU to collaborate in the annual Singapore Chinese Film Festival, student exchange, and overseas study mission trips to Chinese film industries.
