Educational Qualifications

Dr Joanne Tay is Adjunct Professor of the School of Business, Singapore University of Social Sciences. She has worked in academia since 1984, serving on the faculty of the National University of Singapore (Faculty of Accountancy and Business Administration), Nanyang Technological University (Nanyang Business School), Singapore Management University (School of Accountancy) and SUSS.

Dr Tay graduated from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom (UK), with an Honours degree in English and Economics. She qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) with the London office of a Big Eight (now Big Four) accounting firm. She has also been a member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA). Her PhD in Accountancy was awarded by the University of Exeter, UK.

Dr Tay's teaching has focused on financial reporting, assurance, governance and risk management at undergraduate and masters levels. Her research interests have ranged from financial reporting regulation to accounting education, accounting culture, audit quality, and most recently sustainability reporting. At NTU, she chaired the Case Studies Committee within the Business School; at SMU, she headed the Audit & Systems group within the Accountancy Programme, and served as Secretary of the Faculty Senate.

Dr Tay has also served the Singapore profession in a variety of roles – as a member of the Public Accountants Board's Auditor Independence Committee and ISCA's Auditing and Assurance Standards Committee; as examiner and assessor for the audit module in ISCA's professional examinations; and as Associate Editor of the Singapore Management Review.
